Energy Optimization in DVS-Enabled Systems with Rollback Error Recovery

چکیده
With the continued shrinking of CMOS technologies and smaller device sizes, soft errors have become of major concern. Since these types of errors do not reflect a permanent failure of the device, they are also called transient faults. Transient faults or soft errors are mainly caused by Single Event Upsets (SEUs). SEU is a bit-flip in digital systems due to the impact of energy particles [17]. SEU faults arise from energetic particles such as neutrons from cosmic rays and alpha particles from packaging material.

Minimizing System-Wide Energy for Real-Time Systems with Discrete Operation Modes
Energy conservation is one critically important issue in current embedded systems. Dynamic Voltage Scaling (DVS) and Dynamic Power Management (DPM) are two widelyused techniques for saving energy in real-time embedded systems. In this paper, we address the problem of minimizing total system-wide energy consumption (CPU and devices) for the frame-based real-time task model with a DVS-enabled pro...
متن کاملAn Application-Transparent, Platform-Independent Approach to Rollback-Recovery for Mobile Agent Systems
This paper proposes a new approach to rollback-recovery for mobile-agent systems, and describes its implementation in the MESSENGERS mobile agents system. The used checkpointing method allows to implement space and time efficient, user-transparent rollback-recovery in heterogeneous distributed environments. Together with an efficient non-blocking system snapshot algorithm this checkpointing met...
متن کاملWatchdog Processor-Assisted Fast Recovery in Distributed Systems
A major concern in implementing a checkpoint-based recovery protocol for distributed systems is the performance degradation resulting from process roll-backs. In critical systems, it is highly desirable to contain the rollback distance as well as the number of processes involved in the rollback so that timely recovery is possible. One popular approach to accomplish such goals is to control the ...
متن کاملSurvey of Backward Error Recovery Techniques for Multicomputers Based on Checkpointing and Rollback
For implementing fault-tolerance in multicomputer systems, backward error recovery, based on checkpointing and rollback, is often used. During failurefree operation, the process states are regularly saved, and after a fault is detected, the system is rolled back to a previously saved state. We can distinguish four classes of techniques: semi-automatic techniques, message logging, coordinated ch...
متن کاملWhen Discreteness Meets Continuity: Energy-Optimal DVS Scheduling Revisited
The energy-optimal DVS scheduling problem seeks to create a frequency-voltage schedule for the CPU that can achieve energy minimization with tolerable performance loss. Prior solutions to the problem assume that the CPU can run across a continuous range of frequencies and voltages, but today’s DVS-enabled microprocessors can only support a discrete set. As a result, the energy-optimal results i...
